AnnMeanAirTemp4The Mean is measure of central tendency, calculated by the sum of all the data points divided by the number of data points. It is generally referred to as the “average.”

  • The mean is used to compute the average value (not middle or most common value) of a data set.
  • The two means used in statistics are the population mean and the sample mean.

The mean can be a line on a graph or a number in a chart. The average value for a variable in a data set is denoted by that variable with a bar over it, and the average value for a population is denoted by the Greek letter Mu.

For an introduction on calculating the mean, this website is useful. A good Youtube instructional video on how outliers and data point location affect both the median and mean can be found in the link above.
